Head Start programs in Chaves and Eddy counties will now be accepting applications for the upcoming school year, and some of its previously furloughed employees will be able to return to work.
The Southeast New Mexico Community Action Corporation (SNMCAC), a nonprofit organization that manages Head Start programs, stated in a July 2 press release posted on social media that the organization's current contract with the federal government has been extended by a month. They have also received assurances that Head Start, a federally funded preschool program for low-income households, will continue. SNMCAC will soon receive a new five-year contract with the federal government through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
