Residents of Roswell, New Mexico have access to leading medical and health services at the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center (ENMMC). This 162-bed facility provides both inpatient and outpatient care and is supported by 150 healthcare professionals.

ENMMC provides value in two key ways. First, it supports a large region of New Mexico, providing advanced care and treatments when other medical facilities are a three-hour drive away. Second, it allows residents of Roswell to receive the care they need at home. When you move to Roswell, you can feel confident that your medical needs will be taken care of.

“The local community gets the benefit of a slightly larger medical center because of the regional impact in the area,” says Warren Yehl, CEO of ENMMC. “Roswell has a larger hospital because of its outreach. We actually serve as a comprehensive regional center for 10 other hospitals in the area.”

ENMMC Provides Emergency and Non-Emergency Care

Having a quality hospital in Roswell makes an impact on the lives of residents. When a medical emergency occurs, ENMMC staff jump into action. Along with traditional ER services, ENMMC has a stroke center and a chest pain center for people experiencing neuro or cardiac distress. ENMMC works closely with first responders in the area to build a strong partnership that better supports the community.

“Minutes matter, and if we do our jobs well, we can have generational impacts,” says Yehl. “Not only do we save lives, but we can improve the quality of life of residents.” Rapid intervention can lessen the impacts of strokes, injuries, and other medical conditions. This can reduce recovery needs and help patients get better faster.

Getting the care you need in the city where you live also has quality-of-life benefits. Patients will miss less work if they can meet with doctors at ENMMC instead of traveling several hours to a larger facility. Family members and loved ones can also attend appointments and assist with recovery because the patient is healing at home.

“We’re taking care of people’s friends, families, and neighbors,” says Yehl. “You don’t have to travel far away to have good, solid regional care.”

ENMMC also works with tertiary partners for more specialty needs. While ENMMC can support the majority of patients in Roswell, some people will benefit from specialty intervention at another facility.

ENMMC Continues to Invest in Itself

ENMMC is a thriving medical facility because it continues to acquire new tools, resources, and equipment to support its staff. In 2024, the facility remodeled several operating room floors, bought stretchers, purchased sleeper and transport chairs, and established a clinical collaboration with Eastern New Mexico University – Roswell.

One of the biggest updates in 2024 was the launch of the $8 million system for electronic medical records (EMRs). These records keep patient data secure and make communication easier. The EMRs also work with the new centralized monitoring system for the nursing staff. This system allows nurses to see vital signs at a central hub within the nursing stations. They can respond faster, and the data collected is fully integrated into the EMRs.

“With these investments, nurses aren’t managing the system, they’re managing the patient,” says Yehl. “Our goal is to increase the amount of time nurses are spending at the bedsides of patients.”

Automatic record collection frees up time for the human element of medical care while ensuring any data collected is accurate.

“We are fortunate to have Eastern New Mexico Medical Center playing such a vital role in helping people get well and live healthier at their hospital and growing network of physician clinics and other outpatient sites of care,” says Mike Espiritu, President and CEO of the Roswell-Chaves County Economic Development Corporation (RCCEDC). “Not only do they provide amazing services for people in this region, they also provide millions of dollars in charity and uncompensated care for the community’s most vulnerable.”

The Core of ENMMC is Community Involvement

Yehl believes that hospitals are the heart of the community, and a good hospital reflects a healthy community. He not only tries to guide ENMMC into the future with investments in technology and education but also works to create positive interactions with residents. ENMMC is involved in a variety of community events, sponsoring and participating in activities like the Walk for Hope and Teachers with Character.

“I want us to be a facility of impact,” says Yehl. “I want us to make a difference and change lives for the positive.”

This isn’t always easy, but Yehl is confident that he has built a strong team that can produce world-class care while advocating for patient needs.

“I love the community of Roswell,” he says. “We’re geographically diverse, can take care of complex patients, and plan to grow our service lines. Even though we’re getting bigger, Roswell is still a community where you can see the difference you make.”
