A couple of downtown stores are getting exterior upgrades, with some of the costs covered by a local grant program.

J&S Holdings LLC, a partnership that includes local restaurateur Saul Aguilar, owns the properties at 201 and 205 N. Main St. that are leased to retailers.

“We did a lot of structural work already,” Aguilar said, “so this is fixing up the outsides.”

He said he wanted to do his part to help improve downtown.

The 205 N. Main St. site, occupied by Roswell Landing, had some old tile removed. That store and the 201 N. Main St. location, occupied by White Mattress Co. and Gallery Indian Arts, are also having additional work, including new paint and new signage.

At least part of the costs will be covered by a facade grant from the Roswell-Chaves County Economic Development Corp. The amount of the grant was not disclosed as of press time.

Economic Development Corp. Project Manager Melissa Juarez said that the maximum amount of a grant to reimburse costs is $5,000.

“That is actually the first we have done this quarter,” she said.

The EDC has set aside $10,000 a year for facade improvement grants, although she said that the group’s board of directors could decide to increase that amount if the applications submitted any given year warrant a higher amount of funding.

“The grants used to be just for downtown Roswell,” Juarez said, “but now they are available to businesses anywhere in Chaves County.”

She said the decision to expand the grant to all parts of the county made sense because the group and its membership represent the entire county.

The application posted on the EDC website, chavescounty.net, indicates that eligible applicants have to be members of the EDC and that the building to be worked on needs to be occupied by an existing business. The grant also has other criteria about the type of work covered and requires the applicant to submit information from contractors.

Previous facade grant recipients earlier in 2021 were El Toro Bravo restaurant on South Main Street and Spaceport Roswell on East Second Street.

Aguilar, who also owns Los Cerritos and Antigua Cocina restaurants, said he expects the work to be completed in about a week.
